Community Spotlight: Sarah’s Creamery
How far would you travel for a scoop of ice cream? One mile? Ten miles? Some would travel to the ends of the Earth for the perfect, hand-dipped sundae.
Well, chill out, ice cream fans, because the Shangri-La of frozen delights is a lot closer than you think. How close? Ever hear of Dover, Pennsylvania?
If not, you will—after checking out this month’s community spotlight. Here, we’ll give you the scoop on Sarah’s Creamery, along with a few ways you can support this tasty local business!
A Sweet Taste of Penn State
You don’t have to be a Nittany Lion to know that Happy Valley is home to some of the best-tasting ice cream on the planet. Owner and Penn State University alum Jerry Shaffer certainly knows it. That’s why he sources his ice cream directly from the Berkey Creamery in State College.
Named in honor of his daughter, Sarah’s Creamery is a pretty purple palace filled with summertime perfection. With seating for over 40 inside, along with a huge patio featuring outside seating, you can bring your whole family and your best friends along! They even have lawn games outside to enjoy while you visit—and, of course, a music playlist to enjoy all the while. Long held in high regard by the people of Dover, this hidden gem is a quick 20-minute ride from downtown York and, oh, so worth the drive.
To keep it truly local, Sarah’s also churns out 16 homemade flavors, with plenty of seasonal varieties to boot.
Some of their scrumptious homemade flavors include, but are not limited to:
- Banana Fudge
- Peanut Butter Fudge
- Toasted Coconut
- Apple Cinnamon Pie
- Coffee Monster
- Maple Walnut
- Birthday Cake
- Cotton Candy
- Orange Creamy
Want to invent your own sundae? Pop into their parlor and belly up to their create-your-own toppings bar. With over 40 individual offerings, the combinations are almost endless!
Rent Your Own Ice Cream Float
Well, to be specific, it’s an ice cream truck—but they do use the best root beer in their floats. A guaranteed cherry on top for your upcoming wedding or private party, Sarah’s Ice Cream Truck sparks joy whenever it rolls up.
The best part? There’s no need to chase it down with your bicycle! They always come directly to you.
